Elemental Prophecies Chapter 1

I have worked very hard on the following story and hope you enjoy the story. It is only Chapter 1 but I think it is very good. Feel free to post your feelings.

1 The Ceremony
Come on now Ramalya! You’re going to be late. We only have ten minutes until the ceremony starts.” Ramalya was sitting in the bath comfortably in the bath trying to get her nerves down. She was just starting to relax when Calma, the chambermaid, just as soon shuffled over and pulled her out of the warm water. Calma stuffed Ramalya into her under clothes and brushed out her long black hair. Her hair was matted since she just washed it and Calma was getting huffy. “You have to put on the robes yourself because I don’t want to wrinkle them,” Calma turned to leave. “And Don’t sit down they wrinkle that way too. We have to go soon so hurry,” she shuffled out of the room and slammed the door behind her.
Ramalya sat down and tried to relax again by picking up her harp and caressing it gently. The bird in the corner stared at her anxiously and started chirping. Ramalya looked up and smiled at the orange bird. She had always said that she could understand animals, but everyone just thought she wanted to be special. But Ramalya really could understand that bird.
“Play please. I know you have to get ready but please play. You could play that ballad you have to play at the ceremony. You get practice and I get a nice song,” the bird was really hoping to hear a song so Ramalya stood up and started to play the soft music of the Ballad of Coming. It was the song she would have to play at the Coming Ceremony.
The Ceremony, Ramalya thought, it is finally here. The Coming Ceremony was tonight. It is a ritual that I preformed when a sorcerer comes of age and finishes their teachings. Today was Ramalya’s eighteenth summer, she was now eighteen years of age and would be a full sorceress. She would be getting her full powers tonight, and she hoped nothing would go wrong.
The young sorceress was so wrapped up in her music that she did not hear Calma come back into the room. Calma stood entrapped in the music herself, but shook herself out of it and smacked Ramalya on the hand snapping her out of her trance.
Ramalya! We have to go and you’re not even dressed! Now I am going to stand right here and you put on those robes and then lets go,” Calma stood impatiently while Ramalya stowed her harp in the chest by her bed and took out the neatly folded robes. Ramalya quickly admired the robes and unfolded them.
The robes were a brilliant, forest green with a beautiful, golden embroidering down the arms and sides, her hood was trimmed with the same gold. As she was pulling the robes over her head Calma went to a small box on the vanity and pulled out a small white gemmed necklace. She held it delicately and strung it around Ramalya’s neck. “You be careful with this stone now. You hear?”
“Yes, Thank you Calma.” Ramalya straightened the necklace and walked out the door into the courtyard. She walked briskly through the courtyard looking at the stone houses as she passed. They homes were nicely designed although they were small. They where made with forest stones and a mud mixture, but they were homes with character.
Ramalya turned the corner to see the Center town Plaza decorated with beautiful flowers and elegant candles. The whole plaza was gently lit with an illuminating spell and the candles held a blue flame, so the lighting made the plaza all the more beautiful. The fountain was filled with white water lilies and along the cobblestone walkway were white roses in intricately carved pots. The tent she stood in was thin enough to see the stars, which were all the more bright tonight.
The whole town was here at the ceremony which, in turn, made Ramalya all the more nervous. They were here because it was a very tight knit town, and they had all helped bring up Ramalya to this strong, young sorceress. She did not want to disappoint the whole town but she was so nervous.
A soft music started and Ramalya picked up the anciently carved harp, and held it with a great delicacy waiting for her time to go out into the warm summer air. She could see Ligan her sole mentor, he was clad in the same green robe with gold embroidering on his chest. His white beard rose and fell with his calm breathing. Ramalya tried to breath as he was to calm herself down, but when she stopped looking into his face her hands kept shaking.
The music stopped and Ramalya was ready to go out of the thin tent. She pushed open the flap and walked calmly out into the warm air which felt hot under her robe. Ramalya stood ready to play and with a nod from Ligan stroked her slender fingers gently over the strings letting the first chord ring out into the still air. The only other sound one could hear was the fountain which Ramalya focused all her attention on. She walked to the beat of the ballad and kept in rhythm.
Her focus was still on the glowing fountain but her gaze shifted from it to the candles, a small flicker got her attention and held it well. As she was walking around to the cobblestone circle around the fountain the flames leap up and made an archway that Ramalya was hesitant to walk under. She hadn't seen anything like this in a Coming ceremony before, but she thought it might be Ligan’s doing. She shifted her focus back to the fountain.
The fountain bore a statue of the Elemental Guardian, Secan the water Guardian. Secan was holding the Orb of the Sea, her element, and water was spewing out of her mouth. The fountain was made as a tribute to the sea since the town was nestled by the sea she was their element. But tonight there was a strange aura about the fountain, a seeming living factor about it.
Ramalya put these thoughts out of her head and focused on making her way to Ligan. The ballad was long and so when she finally reached him she had to keep playing for a while until the Ballad of Coming was finished. After Ramalya finished Ligan nodded in approval and rose his hands high above his head and chanted an ancient spell to start the ceremony. He brought down his hands and said spell to bring down the flames, “Brint dowgam unt farrnon!” Ligan was troubled after the flames did not go down after the command. He had said the command quieter as if he did not want the town to hear.
Brint dowgam unt farrnon,” Ramalya commanded and the flames instantly went down. Ligan looked overly surprised which made Ramalya nervous, but he continued the ceremony.
“Welcome all to Ramalya of Entwaque’s Coming Ritual! Ramalya has committed to being a sorceress. Do you commit to… Helping those that need help. Curing those that are sick. And pledge to use your powers for good?”
“Yes Master Ligan, I commit to helping those that need help, curing those that are sick, and I pledge to use my powers for good,” Ramalya was talking out of memory not thought. This was because her focus was on the fountain which seemed to be moving.
“Very well. I grant to you your full power,” as Ligan said this he raised his hands and a light began to gather in his hands. Once it was too bright to handle he brought his hands down and motioned for Ramalya to grab the light.
She reached for the light but stopped when there was a sharp wind the sent a needle of ice down her spine. Ramalya grasped the light and smashed it in her hands. The light instantly broke and the pieces were sent into Ramalya’s body. The feeling was sensational, a slight tingle was sent throughout her whole body at an overwhelmingly quick pace.
The feeling of exhilaration passed through her body but was quickly replaced with dread. As the newly powerful sorceress stood there in awe a sudden gust of wind sent another chill down her spine. Thankfully the ceremony was over. Ligan stepped forward to give Ramalya a hug, and the town clapped and cheered. They had another sorcerer in the town and another reason to have a feast.
Ligan held up his hands for silence then spoke, “Now that the ritual is over lets head to the town hall for a feast we shall all remember. It is a joyous occasion!” he lead the way to hall which was right behind the fountain.
But the sorceress did not move. Had she been the only one who had felt that wind or seen the fountain move? Surely that could not be. She stood alone in front of the fountain and look at it in wonder.
Suddenly, a gust of wind shot through the plaza and the water in the fountain stopped. Then the flames leaped up again and the ground shook. Startled Ramalya fell over from the shaking and commanded, “Sallom!!”
Everything stopped, the wind, the ground, the flames, and the water started again. Then four lights appeared in a row right in front of Ramalya. She struggled to stand up and backed away. The lights grew larger and started to form creatures: a Griffon, a Golem, a Sea Dragon, and a Fire Mote. Ramalya gasped as these were the four Elemental Guardians, they own the elements and took care of them sure to keep the elements away from any one wishing to use them for selfish purposes.
“Do not be afraid. We are not here to punish you,” the Griffon spoke using telepathy. He bowed thoughtfully and was followed by the others.
“W-why do you bow to me?” Ramalya was scared it was never told that the guardians ever appeared for humans.
“We bow to you for we need you and your power,” now the Golem spoke, his head bowed in respect, and his voice deep in sadness.
“Our queen is losing her power, but no need to worry, for it is her time ,” the Fire Mote spoke with a more up beat voice.
“Why do you come to me? What am I supposed to do?” Ramalya was afraid she would not sound respectful so she chose her words carefully, “I’m sorry, but I do not think that I could help you. As you saw I just got my full powers.” She bowed respectfully hoping that it was the right thing to do.
“ You can help us you are to be our new queen, the ruler of all nature.” The Sea Dragon spoke too with telepathy but her voice was hissing like a snake’s. The four stepped forward and bowed.
Too stunned to speak Ramalya stood there in awe taking in the graceful forms of the guardians. The griffon’s wings were twice the size of his body and his front claws pierced even the stone of the walkway, his massive head bowed. The golem was shaped like a large man mostly but his hands were twice as big as they should have been, but he still had an unrecognizable grace to him. The Fire Mote was a beautiful creature, she was formed of purely white fire and had no legs just a fine line of flame forming from her body that came from the candles engulfing them completely. The Sea Dragon was the same only she was formed of water and floated in the air with her body flowing gracefully behind her and her antler like horns pointed directly at Ramalya. All of the guardians looked beautiful but dangerous.
With a thought of horror Ramalya realized that she knew not the guardians names, only Secan, the Sea Dragon, the town’s Elemental Guardian. “ I am terribly sorry and I mean the most respect,” Ramalya bowed her head respectfully and stuttered, “ but I do not know your names only Secan my town’s guardian. I am ashamed.” The guardians looked up.
Secan spoke with a nurturing voice, “It is okay most do not know all of our names, but I am blessed that you know my name.” An unrecognizable force brought Ramalya’s head up to meet the Sea Dragon’s eyes. They were just blue oceans no seeable pupils but Ramalya could tell she was looking right into her eyes.
“I,” the griffon stood forward and Secan bowed back letting him speak, “am Windican the Guardian of Wind.” He spread his wings wide and bowed quickly.
Windican step back and the golem step forward with a thud, Ramalya figured that he was made of complete stone. “I am Rontour the Guardian of Earth,” he bowed as well and stepped back.
“I am Farogoda the Guardian of Fire,” the Fire Mote stated stepping forward and bowing.
“It is very nice to meet you and I am sorry for my ignorance,” the sorceress bowed. “but now I must go there is a celebration in my honor and I believe that I am to be present. You are welcome to attend.”
“Thank you but we must deny, as you said it is your celebration, and we may ruin it for you. Before you go though we must tell you, every full moon you will be learned and tested in the ways of nature. We will be looking forward to our meetings. We bid you ado.” Secan said. With one last bow the four guardians began to glow brighter until it was too bright and Ramalya had to look away. When she looked back there were only bulbs of light that flew into the night sky and disappeared.

When they were gone Ramalya just stood there looking up into the sky. She did not know how long she had stood there talking to the guardians, but it was long enough to make her legs hurt. She stood for what seemed like hours before someone came out of the hall and came to her side. It was Melgan, an elfin forest ranger and one of her closest friends. He put his hand on her shoulder and looked up at the sky too.
“They’re really beautiful aren’t they? Well even though I would love to stand her and stare at the stars when there is a celebration to have. You need to come inside and have a good time. After you can come to my station and we can stare at the stars there. Now lets get inside the whole town is waiting for you.” He started to push her toward the hall.
“Alright Melgan. I’m sorry I was just thinking.”
“You usually are,” he smirked and they walked into the hall.

The hall had high ceilings and doors making one feel very small. There were banners that hung from the fireplace’s chimney, and white roses enchanted to be as large a person in each of the corners. The hall had many windows and in each of the windows were pots with white water lilies. The fireplace was lit and a large table set for about seventy stretched across the room. Children ran around playing tag while the adults chatted with one another waiting for the food to come out of the kitchen.
As soon as Ramalya entered the room Ligan looked up from who he was talking with and excused himself. He came right up to her and held out his arm for her to take, and Melgan went to some other friends. “Where have you been? I have been waiting for you for a while,” he whispered.
“I’m sorry I was thinking out side. Did you not feel the ground shake?”
He looked at her a little puzzled, “no, but I’m sure it was nothing. You are probably adjusting to your new powers or you are just hungry. It is hard work completing the Coming Ritual.” He patted her on her arm and smiled, “oh here is the food.”
Out came the chefs holding plates upon plates upon plates of food. Each dish made specially for this event. There was expertly cooked steak, fish and veil, there were boiled vegetables, salads and soups all around, potato salad, corn salad, potato stew, and garlic soup with beets and turnips. So much food and only one night to eat it all. They all sat down as the chefs set all the food down in the center of the table. Ramalya sat at the end of the table in the largest chair in the room. She sat next to Melgan and another elf called Marian. Ligan sat at the other end of the table in and equally large chair with the elders of the town.
Ramalya was given the potato stew first and ate it graciously while she listened to Marian tell about her journey to and from the capital of the land of Leckatur. “The most interesting thing about the trip,” Marian held up her finger to emphasize, “that we were attacked by a kalman.” A kalman is a ice beast used by the Drakath, a dark force that existed in the warring times of the elemental beginnings. Kalman had not been seen since.
“A kalman?!?! Are you sure it was as you say and not something different,” Melgan was on the verge of yelling. “After all none have been reported since the wars, and one so far south? Surely you have been mistaken.”
“No it was indeed a kalman. Unless there is another being that is made completely out of ice. And not to worry it was not of that power. It was rather weak, not like back then when they ruled the north.” Marian’s voice was very reassuring.
Ramalya sighed, “yes that is good, but you have to admit that it is rather odd to see one so far south. They may roam free up north even but down here. Odd. Very odd.” They were given the next course which was a small salad.
The rest of the evening was nice and quiet. Although Ramalya did not like having to get up on the podium and play the harp in front of every person in town yet again. But over all it was a good night. Right down to the end.
After the feast Ramalya and Melgan left the town and went to his shack in the forest like they normally did on warm summer nights such as this. They would lay down wool blankets on his splintery roof, watch the stars and talk about that days events. That night Ramalya had all the more to talk about, enough maybe to last the whole night.
Ramalya had a lot on her mind a wondered if she should even tell Melgan about the nights previous events. “Melgan, you know some thing happened tonight that is beyond my thinking,” she was still wondering if she should tell him.
“Yes. My little Rama is a full sorcerer,” as he said this he pinched her cheek like she was a little baby.
“No, not that,” she said smacking his hand away. “After the ceremony. Something amazing… I don’t know if I should tell you,” she paused.
“Oh come on. You can trust me, can’t you?” He turned around and walked casually backwards, dodging every tree and branch.
“Yes I can. I guess I’ll tell you. It is a long story so…” They had reached the shack, it was a small thing one room. Not much space, which is why Melgan chose to spend his time on the roof, instead of in the small booth of a home. Inside was cramped with the bed in the corner, a table right next to it and a fire pit with a few pots hanging over the pit. The only other space was used for the ladder which lead to the roof. There were already wool blankets left from that morning’s watch so they were ready to relax right away. When they were all settled Ramalya looked at Melgan thoughtfully.
“You can’t tell anyone. Promise?”
“I promise.”
“Okay it’s a long story so we might be here for a while.” Ramalya told Melgan every detail of what the guardians had said to her and even how they had come and gone. Melgan patiently listened nodding only to indicate he was listening. Only when Ramalya was completely done with her story did Melgan speak and it took him some time to absorb the tale.
When he finally did speak Ramalya was very impressed that it was not a joke, “This is amazing. Have you told Ligan? You know he has always been interested in those types of things. You know elemental and nature forces. You must tell him.”
“I know, I will tell him tomorrow. He seemed really tired and I wanted to let him rest. It is not everyday you give someone their full powers.” Ramalya started to laugh, remembering that she had been given her full powers that night. With all the other events she had forgotten all about her own triumph.
“Well, I guess it would be a rather good idea to head back after all it is halfway through the night. That tale is a long one. Would you like me to walk you back to your home?”
“No that will not be necessary. I need some time to think also so I bid you a goodnight.” Ramalya hopped off the shack, and with a wave she made her way back through the forest and to the town. The night’s events enveloped in her mind she worked her way through the darkened halls of her home, to her comfortable room. She blew her bird a kiss, undressed, and went to bed snuggling over top of the covers. Almost as soon as she lay her head gently down on her pillow she fell into a dreamless sleep.
